Introduction
This study aimed to investigate relation between cystographic anastomotic urinary leakage after retropubic radical prostatectomy (RP) and early urinary incontinence.
Methods
From January 2016 to December 2018, 48 patients who underwent cystography after RP in our institution were retrospectively analyzed. The cystography were performed on day 10 after surgery. In case of urinary leakage, the test was repeated at 7 day intervals until absence of UL without removal of the catheter. The subjects were divided into two groups: the no urinary leakage group (nUL group) and the urinary leakage group (UL group). Continence was defined as using no pads and having no urine leakages. The prostate was dissected in an antegrade fashion and urethrovesical anastomosis was performed with continuous suture.
Results
Perioperative characteristics and outcomes were similar in 2 groups. Time to remove catheter was significantly different between UL group and nUL group (25.1days vs 10.0days p=0.001). The incontinence rate at 1 month was significantly different (90.5% vs 59.3% p=0.016). However, the incontinence rate at 3 month and 6 month were not insignificantly different.
Conclusions
Cystographic anastomotic urinary leakage extends period of catheterization and led to higher rate of very early urinary incontinence, but the continence rate became similar after postoperative 3 months.
