After established immediately after Korea gained independence from Japan, which was a period when people went through so much political and social confusion, the Korean Urological Association contributed in the development of medicine and promotion of health. It started as “the Korean Dermatological and Urological Association” established on November 10, 1945 and hosted the first convention on November 15, 1947, launching activities as an academic and research organization exploring professional roles in the field of urology. The members decided to separate urology and dermatology on June 20, 1954 during a temporary meeting and modified the constitution, selecting president Hak Song Lee and vice-president Choi, Jae Wee of the Korean Urological Association. After the first convention on November 15, 1947, the Association hosted academic conventions along with the dermatology association. After hosting an independent convention on October 1, 1959 during the 11th Korean Medical Association convention, the Korean Urological Association has hosted its convention once a year. The number of conventions increased twice a year in 1974, once in spring and once in fall, hosting the 53rd convention as of the year 2003.

It published “The Korean Journal of Urology” in January 1960. At the beginning, this journal was established twice a year. It was published quarterly from 1968 to 1976 and bimonthly from 1977 to 1981, published 6 times a year. Due to a significant increase in the number of articles submitted, the number increased 8 times a year in 1982. It went back to being published 6 times a year from 1983 to 1993. It was published monthly, 12 times a year in 1994. As of 2005, the journal number 45, 12th volume was published. An index of all the journals published previously was published in 1988. It was supplemented in 1991, aiding the collection and understanding of articles and information published in Korea in the field of urology. "Urology", a co-written book by professors of medical schools, was published in March 1991, modified in March 1996, and again in March 2001, functioning as a reference to medical students, interns, residents and physicians.

The field of urology grew so much so that different societies came under the Association to cover different areas of urology. Under the Korean Urological Association, there are 7 societies to cover sub-areas of urology including the Korean Andrological Society, Korean Society of Pediatric Urology, Korean Continence Society, Korean Prostate Society, Korean Urological Oncology Society, Korean Society of Endourology and Robotics, and Korean Association of Urogenital Tract Infection.

At the time of establishment, the number of the Association was only 50 including those from the dermatology field. After producing 1 urology specialists in 1953, a total of 1,717 specialists were produced by 2004. The number of teaching hospitals started to increase 1958 and increased to 84 as 2004. The period of residency was 4 years at the beginning, decreased to 3 years, but increased again to 4 years in 1986. The Pusan-Kyungnam section, the first regional branch of the Association, was established on December 27, 1954 and different branches including in the Seoul, Daegu-Kyungbook, Honam, Daejun-Chungchung, Gangwon, and Inchon-Kyunggi sections were established, performing activities befitting each region.

In international academic exchanges, the Association is playing an important role in the International and Asian Urological Association. The Korean Urological Association hosted the third Conference of Asian Urological Association in Seoul from June 12-15, 1996 when some 750 members participated from 21 countries. The Korea-Japan Urological Conference was established in 1984 for academic exchanges with Japanese urologists with the conference being held in each country taking turns. The Association and the societies under the Association are also carrying out active international exchanges. Especially, some 800 people from the world gathered in Seoul to participate in the international conference hosted by the Korean Continence Society from September 18 to 21, 2001.

The Korean Urological Association kept the presidency system but established a 2-year-term board system by modifying its constitution in 1982, actively pursuing its goals. Starting in 1983, it has investigated the status of teaching hospitals to improve the quality of urology residents. Starting in 1993, a meeting is held in each year to discuss overall issues related with residents. It is giving a mid-term test to residents starting in 1988 and provides training to residents once a year starting in 1993.

The history of the Korean Urological Association was published in 1998 to cover its history from 1945 to 1998. The Korean Urological Association homepage(https://www.urology.or.kr/) was set up in November 1999, opening a new era in the urology field in the information age. There was the medical dispute from June to December 2000. The third edition of urology textbook was published modified in March 2001. A revised booklet, 'The Introduction of Korean Urological Association', was published in November 2002, and the ethics board and committee were set up in the same year in December.
